About JFE-BS

JFE Bars & Shapes contributes to society
by achieving environmental
and human friendly steel production.

Our company is the only steelmaker specialized for electric arc furnace (EAF)
operation in the JFE Group, which plays a central part in the Japanese steel industry.
We contribute to building a circulating society by reproducing steel
products using scrap metal,
which is one of the few resources in Japan, as the raw material.

JFE Bars & Shapes as EAF steelmaker

EAF steelmakers are companies that each run a steel recycling business that reproduces metal scrap into new steel products.
The steelmaking process using an EAF produces lower CO2 emissions and is considered as friendly to the global environment.
Shapes and reinforcing steel bars, which are our company’s products,
are used in a wide range of fields for construction such as buildings and schools,
steel towers, ships, and tunnels, and support social infrastructure.

Differences between electric arc furnaces and blast furnaces

EAFs use scrap metal,
while blast furnaces use iron ore.

An EAF produces steel by melting iron & scrap metal as the raw material using electricity (electrodes) while adjusting the components.
A blast furnace produces pig iron using iron ore and coal (coke) as the raw material.
The produced pig iron is further refined in a converter, and the components are adjusted to produce steel.

With CO2 emissions 1/4 of a blast furnace,
it is an environment-friendly steelmaking method.

An EAF is capable of producing steel with energy consumption approximately 1/3 of the blast furnace,
and CO2 emissions approximately 1/4.
The reason is a difference in the production processes. In comparison to a blast furnace that makes steel from iron ore, an EAF,
which reuses scrap metal from steel products or the like, requires a fewer processes.
EAFs represent a business that is attracting much attention anew amid circumstances
where attention has been globally drawn to efforts towards a decarbonized society.

Processes until scrap metal becomes product

Collected scrap metal is reborn as new steel products with advanced technologies.

The main raw material of steel products that we produce is scrap metal.
Collected scrap metal such as construction waste, scrap from dismantled cars,
and waste cans is reborn as new steel products with our manufacturing technology,
and the produced products are sent into society again.

  1. ① Melting

Pieces of scrap metal that are selected according to each product category are charged into an EAF, and melted with electric energy to become molten steel.

  2. ② Refining

Impurities in the molten steel are removed to make the component composition suitable for the respective customer needs.

  3. ③ Continuous casting

Billets are produced by continuously solidifying the molten steel while responding to various quality requirements.

  4. ④ Heating

Billets are heated in a heating furnace, and the temperature is raised to a level at which the billets can be formed in the rolling process.

  5. ⑤ Rolling

By using multiple rolling mills (sets of rolls), billets are worked, forged, and formed to produce products.

  6. ⑥ Cooling

Since the temperature of the product is high immediately after it is rolled, it is cooled on a cooling bed to a temperature at which it can be cut and bound.

  7. ⑦ Finishing

The product is straightened, inspected, cut, and bound according to the use of the customer.

  8. ⑧ Shipping

Products that have passed all tests are transported through a land route or sea route in the prescribed package. They are delivered to the customer according to the delivery date.

Strengths of JFE Bars & Shapes

Our company conducts steelmaking that looks to the future as an EAF steelmaker having a nationwide network.
While always giving consideration to the environment and society, the company is also actively working on waste recycling.

A nationwide network of manufacturing and sales bases

Our company has five works across Japan and produces and sells common steel stocks, and is one of Japan’s largest steelmakers of EAF products for low-carbon steels. By producing reinforcing steel bars at three locations, and shapes at two locations, the company has established an efficient production/transport structure.
Our company produces steel products of various types and sizes, such as common steel shapes, reinforcing steel bars, flat bars, and H beams, and is capable of responding to the various needs of customers. Having five works and several sales offices across Japan, our company seeks to provide services that satisfy our customers throughout Japan and abroad.

Waste recycling with
cutting-edge technology

Our company is one of a few steelmakers having a resource-recycling business that uses waste (such as waste batteries) together with scrap metal as a resource.
With material recycling in which waste is instantly melted and detoxicated by ultraheat treatment (arc temperature: 4,000°C) using an EAF, almost no residue is produced. In addition, thermal recycling where thermal energy is recovered and reused is achieved.

Giving consideration to the environment
and society as a steelmaker

To ensure environmental and human friendly steel production, our company pursues its business activities while always paying consideration to the environment and the local community.
The issues of global warming and climate change are major challenges to humans and the earth. We pursue energy saving, resource saving, and CO2 reduction while increasing energy efficiency using cutting-edge technology and equipment.
In addition, with the aim of being a company trusted by our customers and community citizens, we attach importance to our connection with the community through social contribution activities.
