Environmental charter of JFE Bars & Shapes Corporation

In accordance with the Environmental charter of JFE Bars & Shapes Corporation, we aim to achieve harmony with the global environment and to improve it in our corporate activities.

Philosophy

Our company aims at building an affluent society by pursuing business activities that are in harmony with the environment while positioning the improvement of the global environment as our major managerial priority based on the environmental philosophy of the JFE Group.

Policy

1. Reduction on the environmental burdens in all business activities
We intend not only to strive to reduce present and future environmental burdens, but also to pursue technological development intended for the reduction of environmental burdens.
2. Contribution through technologies and products
We intend to contribute to building better environment by developing environmentally friendly products and introducing cutting-edge technologies and facilities.
3. Contribution through resource-saving and energy-saving business activities
We will strive for effective resource utilization such as resource saving and energy saving by pursuing business activities with a view to the global environment.
4. Promotion of communication with society
As a member of local community, we intend to contribute to building better environment for the community by seeking collaboration with citizens, administration and companies.

Low carbon action plan

Our company intends to pursue the realization of a low-carbon society with major focus placed on the contribution to a resource-circulating society through active introduction of leading-edge energy-saving technology in the steelmaking and rolling processes, and active operation of resource-recycling business.

Energy-saving activities

Our company strives to minimize thermal energy loss in each process. In the steelmaking process, “ECOARC,” an ecological and economical arc furnace that uses the exhaust heat of an EAF to preheat scrap, is adopted. In the rolling process, the direct rolling method, in which a half-finished product manufactured in the steelmaking process is rolled as-is without being cooled, is adopted, making a considerable contribution to CO₂ reduction.

Social contribution activities

JFE Bars & Shapes conducts long-lasting continued social contribution activities. With the aim of being a company trusted by our customers and community citizens, we not only provide cooperation throughout the company and at our works, but also conduct educational activities intended to raise our employees’ awareness of social contribution and participation in local activities throughout the year.

Social contribution of the entire company: Our company provides cooperation to the Japan Organ Transplant Network in the form of financial donation. The Japan Organ Transplant Network is the only organization in Japan that serves as an intermediary to ensure that an organ is presented to a person desiring organ transplant with the best possible method while respecting the will of a person or his/her family to provide his/her organ after death.
Social contribution of our works: To support social and welfare activities in areas where our works are located, we conduct activities such as donation of goods through organizations such as the Municipal Councils of Social Welfare established in the respective municipalities.
Approach to local communities: Our works each conduct activities such as participation in cleaning activities in the community, participation in plant tours organized by the local government, and plant tours inviting a community association and/or an elementary school.

Festival

Our works each hold a festival once a year. Inviting our employees’ families, partner companies, clients, and people in the neighborhood, we seek to encourage them to better understand our company. At the festival, our employees serve meals at stalls, a bingo game is held, and people belonging to neighboring groups perform on the stage. These festivals are favorably

Safety activities

To establish a safe workplace, our company has continued to conduct activities such as safety education (e.g., layered education, hazard experience training), and safety and health activities (e.g., risk assessment activities, similar accident prevention activities, small group improvement activities, patrolling activities, audit activities).

Pursuit of diversity

We are working to secure human resources in a diversified society, utilize human resources in an aging society with fewer children, and establish an employment system that corresponds to work-life balance and enables a pleasant workplace. Recently, we introduced a return-to-work assist program for employees who have left our company for child raising or caregiving.

Corporate governance

Our company has established a board of directors and auditors, and conducts supervision concerning the execution of operation and monitoring of management, in order to strengthen our corporate soundness. In addition, in order to clarify the authorities and responsibilities due to separation of corporate decision making and execution of operation, and to speed up the execution, we have adopted an executive officer system. With these, as a member of the JFE Group, we strive to maximize our corporate value for all stakeholders.

Compliance

While recognizing that thorough implementation of compliance is essential for the operation of business and the building of a trusting relationship with stakeholders, we have continued to establish regulations and a whistle-blowing system involving group companies, and conduct educational/enlightenment activities for employees using a rulebook.

Internal control structure

Our company has established a structure for ensuring that the execution of duties complies with laws, regulations, and the articles of incorporation, as well as a structure for ensuring that the company’s operation is appropriate. We are working on the establishment and operation of an appropriate internal control system by reporting the state of correction and improvement of detected problems, and the state of our efforts to prevent recurrence.
